THE LONELY DRAGON

BY OLIVER BRIGGS

ONCE upon a time there was a princess called Lily, and she went off for a walk in the woods with her mummy and her daddy. In the woods she went the wrong way because she was too busy looking at the birds. Her parents managed to get home without realising Princess Lily wasn't with them. She had got caught by a dragon. He was a big, lonely dragon. He was also a good dragon and he was sad because all the knights always wanted to attack him. He told the princess: “I haven't got any human friends.”

“Don't cry, Bertie,” said the princess. “I would like to go back to my castle, but I will still be your friend. Can you fly me back there, please?” “OK,” said Bertie, “but you must tell the knights that they mustn't fight me. I don't want any swords stuck in my bottom – it hurts!” And so the two friends flew back to Lily's castle. Her mummy and daddy, the king and queen, were overjoyed to see her, but shocked to see the dragon. “Don't worry,” said Lily, “Bertie's my special friend”. So they said thankyou to him and promised that they wouldn't let the knights hurt him ever again.
